How to Encourage Girls to Play Sports
February 19, 2026
Introduce Sports Early
It’s never too early to introduce your little one to the world of sports! Start by showing them different options and letting them experiment with things like soccer, basketball, or just running around outside. Grab some simple toys like a ball or jump rope and make it fun.
The goal isn’t to pressure them but to let them explore different activities until they find something that clicks. It could be something as simple as throwing a ball around in the backyard!
Provide Role Models
Girls need to see that other girls can rock it in sports!
Find female athletes who inspire you and show your girl how amazing they are. Watch women’s sports together on TV, or better yet, go to live games if you can.
You’d be surprised how motivating it is to see women kicking butt on the field. And sharing stories of trailblazing women who’ve broken barriers in sports can really get them excited!
Create a Positive Environment
The last thing we want is for sports to feel like a chore. Keep it fun!
Focus on how awesome it is just to be out there moving and playing, rather than obsessing over competition.
Celebrate the small wins—like a great pass or a new skill learned—because it’s not just about winning. When they see that effort is appreciated, they’ll be more likely to keep at it.
Build Self Confidence
It’s so important to keep things encouraging. Instead of focusing on what they can’t do, highlight what they’re good at, even if it’s just a small thing like improving their form or working hard.
Avoid comparing them to others (especially boys, since we all know how that can go). If they’re making progress, celebrate that, no matter how small.
Confidence grows when you feel supported, and it can make all the difference!
Chose Inclusive Programs
Look for sports programs that are all about inclusion. Find leagues or teams that celebrate diversity and are welcoming to girls of all backgrounds.
Also, make sure the coaches are positive, supportive, and trained to work with girls. The last thing you want is for your kid to feel uncomfortable or excluded.
A welcoming environment is key to keeping them excited to play!
Emphasize Health and Well-Being
Frame sports as a way to feel strong, healthy, and full of energy. The more they understand how being active makes them feel better—mentally and physically—the more they’ll want to keep doing it.
Talk about how sports help with mood, energy levels, and overall health, not just the way they look. This can help them fall in love with how they feel when being active.
Involve Friends and Family
Everything’s more fun with friends, right? Encourage your daughter to join a sports team with her friends, or at least get involved in something they can do together.
And don’t forget to join in on the fun as a family. You can all go for bike rides, play catch, or just run around the park. Plus, showing interest in her practices and games is a great way to keep her motivated!
Provide Proper Equipment
No one wants to play sports in uncomfortable gear! Let your girl pick out some equipment or clothing she likes, so she feels confident and comfortable while playing.
If she has a say in the process and gets to pick out a cool jersey or gear in her favorite color, it’ll make all the difference. Feeling good in what you wear is a game-changer!
Challenge Stereotypes
We’ve all heard those myths about which sports are “for boys” and which are “for girls.” It's time to break those down! Encourage your daughter to try out whatever sport she’s curious about—whether it’s basketball, gymnastics, martial arts, or even skateboarding.
There are so many amazing women out there excelling in sports that were once considered “boys’ sports,” and they make fantastic role models!
Offer Variety and Flexibility
Not every girl is going to love the same thing, and that’s okay! Let her try different sports until she finds the one she clicks with.
Maybe she’ll love soccer one season, then switch to tennis the next—there’s no wrong choice. And that’s the beauty of it! Be flexible and let her explore different options. It’s all about finding what makes her feel excited and happy.
Be Patient and Supportive
Lastly, be patient. It might take a little while for her to find her groove, and that’s totally normal. Support her journey, even if she’s not 100% in love with sports right away.
Just keep encouraging her to try new things, without pressuring her. Let her know that it’s okay to step back, and that whatever she chooses, you’ll support her 100%.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, the goal is to make sports feel like a fun, exciting way to be active and confident. It’s not about pushing too hard or expecting perfection—it’s about letting your girl find her passion, have fun, and grow stronger along the way. The more you create a positive, supportive environment, the more she’ll want to keep playing, learning, and loving sports!
So, let’s give our girls the opportunity to shine, in whatever sport they choose, and let them know they can do anything!
